More Reading, Less Eating: How Knowledge and Science Can Help You Survive and Rebuild Your Life During Exceptional Times

—If you told me 5 years ago that I'd prefer to read a book instead of scroll through social media posts, I wouldn't have believed you.—

Just a quick heads up… This isn't a "feel good" article telling you that everything's gonna be alright.  This won't help you get an EIDL grant or the most forgiveness on your PPP loan.  This won't help your clients be more understanding of the fact that you still have to pay all of your bills. This won't help you master the next Zoom meeting or virtual commerce conundrum. This won't make you feel guilty if you don't enjoy home-schooling your kids as much as your over-achieving neighbors. This article won't try to tell you which political affiliation is worse than the others.

This article won't tell you to embrace "the new normal," or "pivot" and just get used to not hugging your friends and loved ones when they're standing right there in front of you or to stop feeling uncomfortable when you see everyone wearing masks in the supermarket.  And, this article won't ask you to donate or give extra money to another person or another business with money you should probably be saving just in case the rainy days continue and/or return in the Fall.

Nope.

This little article only has two intended goals.  The first is to encourage you to consider reading more content outside of what is normally being promoted on social media, by our government, or in our schools.

The second is to encourage you to not only consider eating less harmful foods less often, but to simply eat less often in general.   It’s the old “garbage in garbage out” philosophy with a little timing twist.

—If you told me 5 years ago that I'd be skipping breakfast most days and that my lunches would look this, I wouldn’t have believed you.—

Do you like being in control? So do I.  Is it beyond frustrating that you can't just roll up your sleeves as usual and "fix" this current medical and financial crisis? I know the feeling! But the harsh reality is, neither one of us can fix, accurately predict, or end this thing right now.

What we CAN do and what we DO have control over is the information we decide to put into our minds and the food we choose to put into our bodies during maddening times like these.

The following three books explain the power of basic nutrition, intermittent fasting, ketosis, autophagy and carb-cycling.  I encourage you to check them out the next time you have the choice of spending 45 minutes online arguing with someone who is incapable of having a reasonable discussion vs. digging into a book that explains how you can feel better, live longer, save money, save time, and have more energy to deal with exceptional circumstances.  Whether your escape is social media, consuming empty calorie foods that are high in sugar, or some other kryptonite, these unprecedented circumstances and challenges you are running away from will still be there when you are done delaying the inevitable.  The only difference is that your mental and physical gas tanks will be getting dangerously closer to empty.  (Note: This is when most of us make poor decisions that have compounding negative effects.)

Here’s the bottom line, folks: If you can’t take care of yourself, you can’t take care of the people who depend on you.

—If you told me 5 years ago that I'd start drinking coffee AND that I'd be blending that cup of coffee with butter and MCT oil, I wouldn't have believed you.—

Consider reading "Ageless" by Strauss Zelnick.

"I treat my mind, body, and soul with respect, and I avoid toxic substances and behaviors...  As a result, I can usually run all day- efficiently, effectively, and happily. This is what I mean by being better, faster, stronger, and ageless.  It's about possessing vitality, minimizing disease risk, and maintaining an attractive body that looks and feels the same way- or even better than- it did decades ago." - Strauss Zelnick

Consider reading "Ketofast" by Dr. Joseph Mercola.

"All of these external disruptions have contributed to impaired mitochondrial health, which then kicks off a cascade of physiological events that can impair your body's ability to fight disease. ...Your ability to become metabolically flexible will be a foundational element for resolving most chronic health challenges you have." -Dr. Joseph Mercola

Consider reading the "The Bulletproof Diet" by Dave Asprey.

"If you're accustomed to following a typical American diet or have a habit of counting calories in order to lose weight, the thought of giving up these practices might be scary. These diets may have gotten you so out of tune with your body that you don't even recognize when you are hungry or when you are full, and so you rely on counting calories and prepackaged meals to tell you how much and when to eat. ..When you start eating the amounts of good fats with adequate protein and none of the garbage that breaks your body's natural appetite-regulation equipment, your energy and hunger systems will come back online.  You'll know when you're hungry and you'll know when you're satisfied.  There will be no more sugar crashes and you won't have to suppress your appetite anymore."  - Dave Asprey

—If you told me 5 years ago that I could workout like this on the 7th day of a water-only fast, I wouldn't have believed you.—

If you're like me, you don't like being talked down to or preached at, but you do welcome being proven wrong and appreciate discovering new things that could have a meaningful impact on your life.  These books contain a few messages that have indeed impacted my quality of life and have helped my family and me survive and advance these past two months.  I don't dare say we have endured and conquered, but I know for a fact that we have given ourselves and our businesses a fighting chance against an enemy that is illusive, relentless, and keeps changing the rules of engagement, like our current formidable foe.

For my friends and a few colleagues who asked me to share my experience, I hope you find this article helpful in starting to learn more about strengthening your spirit, re-gaining control of your appetite, and achieving greater physical and mental efficiency.

Onwards and upwards.
